Amazon FBA Expiration Rules for Supplements: What to Do With Short-Dated Stock

If you sell supplements through Fulfillment by Amazon, expiration dates quietly decide how much of your inventory turns into revenue. Stock that is perfectly safe and months away from expiring can still be blocked from new FBA shipments or pulled for disposal. This guide explains how Amazon's shelf-life rules work for vitamins, protein and other supplements, when inventory becomes "short-dated," and what you can do to recover cash before it is destroyed.
The two numbers that matter: 90 days and 50 days
Amazon's expiration-dated inventory policy comes down to two thresholds.
- Receiving rule (90 days + usage time): when units are checked in at a fulfillment center, they need enough remaining shelf life for a customer to finish the product, plus an extra 90 days. It is not simply "90 days left."
- Disposal rule (50 days): units that fall within 50 days of their expiration date are removed for disposal, and disposed units are not returned to you.
For supplements, the "usage time" part is where most sellers get caught. The larger the bottle, the more shelf life Amazon expects at check-in.
How much shelf life does your supplement need?
A quick way to estimate the minimum remaining shelf life at check-in is: days of supply + 90 days. For example:
| Product | Days of supply | Approx. shelf life needed at check-in |
|---|---|---|
| 30-count daily vitamin | 30 days | About 4 months |
| 90-count daily gummy | 90 days | About 6 months |
| 240-count daily supplement | 240 days | About 11 months |
This is why large-count bottles and bulk protein tubs become "too short-dated for Amazon" long before they are anywhere near expiring. Always confirm the current requirement for your category in Seller Central, since Amazon can update its guidelines.
What counts as short-dated supplement inventory?
In practice, supplement stock tends to get stuck in three situations:
- It can no longer be sent into FBA. The remaining shelf life is below the 90-days-plus-usage threshold, so new shipments would be rejected or received as unsellable.
- It is already in FBA but selling too slowly. Units are drifting toward the 50-day disposal window faster than they sell through.
- It is sitting in your own warehouse or 3PL. Excess from over-ordering, a packaging change, a discontinued SKU or a cancelled retail order that will never reach Amazon in time.
In all three cases the product is usually still sealed, in date and fully sellable, just not through the channel you planned.
Your options for short-dated supplements
1. Discount it on Amazon
Running coupons or price cuts can speed up sell-through, but it trains your shoppers to wait for deals and can drag down your normal price. It also does not help stock that is already too short-dated to ship into FBA.
2. Create a removal order
You can pull units out of FBA before they reach the disposal window. This saves the inventory, but you still need a buyer, and you pay removal fees and freight to get it back.
3. Sell to domestic discount sites or liquidators
This moves stock quickly, but your brand often reappears at a steep discount in the same market where you sell at full price. For many brands, that price damage costs more than the inventory itself.
4. Sell to a specialist buyer, with an export option
A buyer that specializes in supplements can price by lot and expiry date and pay quickly. Look for one that can also export: selling to buyers outside your core market recovers cash while keeping discounted product away from your regular shoppers. Supplements with months of shelf life left are often in demand in off-price channels abroad.
How to get the best price for short-dated stock
- Act early. Months of shelf life remaining is the single biggest driver of price. Waiting a few weeks can cut the value of a lot.
- Send expiry dates per lot. Buyers price each lot on its own dates, so a clear list gets you a faster, sharper offer.
- Include units, case pack and location. Pallet-size and larger lots with clear logistics get better pricing.
- Keep packaging sealed and clean. Retail-ready condition scores highest, even if the outer cartons are worn.
- Ask where the goods will be sold. If protecting your Amazon price matters, confirm the product will leave your market.

Frequently asked questions
Does Amazon return expired or near-expiry FBA units?
No. Units that fall within 50 days of expiration are marked for disposal, and disposed units are not returned. If you want to recover value, you need to act before that window.
Is the 90-day rule the same for every supplement?
The extra 90 days applies on top of the time it takes to use the product, so the total shelf life required depends on the bottle size and serving schedule. Some categories have their own requirements, so check Seller Central for your product.
Can I sell supplements that are too short-dated for FBA?
Yes. Stock that no longer meets FBA's check-in threshold can still be sold through other channels, including export buyers, as long as it is in date and in good condition.
